School Nurse Consultant Role in Schools

School Nurse Consultants manage students with significant health concerns at individual schools, including elementary, secondary, charter, preschools, before and after child care programs, summer sessions and ChildFind. The goal of the School Nurse Consultant is to work closely with parents, health care providers, school staff and others to coordinate the health care of the student. School Nurse Consultants also provide direct services as needed by training and delegating to personnel working with students identified as having complex medical needs.

 

Collaboration with Special Education

School Nurse Consultants are an integral part of the Special Education Team and are responsible for a portion of the Individual Education Plan (IEP) that pertains to the students' health. The School Nurse Consultant attends school team meetings and IEP meetings of students with complex health issues to insure the implementation of necessary accommodations for students. This includes the responsibility for students needing individual health care plans (HCPs) and 504 plans written in accordance with Section 504 of the Americans with Disabilities Act for a medical reason.

Health Assistants

Most schools have an identified person, called the Health Assistant, who carries out the medical duties for a limited time during the day. Other office staff members help fill this role in the absence of the Health Assistant. The Nursing Services provides oversight of the Health Assistants and other school personnel who are available to respond to the immediate health needs of students.

Typically, Health Assistants and other office staff members are not medical professionals. School Nurse Consultants provide general training and safety plans involving first aid training and the care of sick children who come to the classroom teacher or office staff with a health need. The office staff is also supplied with a Health Guidelines Manual that specifies actions for a variety of medical situations.

Outside Agencies

Complaints regarding violations of Title VI, (race, national origin), Title IX (sex, gender), Section 504/ADA (handicap or disability), may be filed directly with the Office for Civil Rights, U.S. Department of Education, 1244 North Speer Blvd., Suite 310, Denver, CO 80204. Complaints regarding violations of Title VII (employment) and the ADEA (prohibiting age discrimination in employment) may be filed directly with the Federal Office of Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, 303 E. 17th Ave., Suite 510, Denver, CO 80202, or the Colorado Civil Rights Commission, 1560 Broadway, Suite 1050, Denver, CO 80202.

NOTICE OF DESTRUCTION OF SPECIAL EDUCATION RECORDS

Special Education records which have been collected by Douglas County School District related to the identification, evaluation, educational placement, or the provision of special education in the district, must be maintained under state and federal laws for the period of five (5) years after special education services have ended for the student. Special education services end when the student is no longer eligible for services, graduates, or completes his/her educational program at age 21, or moves from the district. This notification is to inform parents/guardians and former students of Douglas County School District's intent to destroy the special education records of students who exited special education services as of June 30, 2016. These records will be destroyed in accordance with state law unless the parent/guardian or eligible (adult) student notifies the school district otherwise. After five years, the records are no longer useful to the district, but may be useful to the parent/guardian or former student in applying for social security benefits, rehabilitation services, college entrance, etc. The parent/guardian or eligible (adult) student may request a copy of the records by requesting the records by email to [email protected]
