Advanced Placement

AP Exams

Exams are administered in the first two full weeks in May, but registration for exams is in the fall. All CVHS AP students are expected to take the AP exam. The exam cost will be automatically paid through course fees due in the fall. Exams cost $99 each. Late registration and make-up exams will cost extra. Scores will be reported in June/July.

AP Capstone

CVHS is one of only 3 schools in DCSD to offer the prestigious AP Capstone Diploma Program!

AP Capstone is an innovative program that equips students with the independent research, collaborative teamwork, and communication skills that are increasingly valued by colleges. It is composed of two year-long courses:

  1. AP Seminar (taken as a sophomore) which provides sustained practice of investigating issues from multiple perspectives and cultivates student writing abilities so they can craft, communicate, and defend evidence-based arguments
  2. AP Research (taken as a junior or senior) which allows students to explore deeply an academic topic, problem, or issue of individual interest and through this inquiry, students design, plan, and conduct a year-long mentored, research-based investigation.

Participating in AP Capstone can help students:

  • Stand out to colleges in the application process.
  • Develop key academic skills they'll use in college and beyond.
  • Become self-confident, independent thinkers and problem solvers.

Students who earn scores of 3 or higher in AP Seminar and AP Research and on four additional AP Exams of their choosing will receive the AP Capstone Diploma™. This signifies their outstanding academic achievement and attainment of college-level academic and research skills. You can find out more about this opportunity here.

If your student would like to participate in this program as a junior (11th grade) or sophomore (10th grade), please reach out to his/her CV counselor right away.

Oftentimes, students will combine Advanced Placement credits earned with concurrent enrollment college credits to achieve degrees and certification. To find out more, please review this document, which includes a sample CV 4-year schedule and how these two programs complement one another: Program Overview of Advanced Placement and Concurrent Enrollment at CVHS.
